What I want to share with you in this blog is the fact on how music genre is moving and adopted from generation to generation during 1990s till today. But before I do that I need to highlight different kind of genres we have in South Africa.
Below I want to mention a few of musical genres we have in South Africa. Probably that you were not aware of or did not even knew they existed. We have Kwela-kwela, Marabi, Mbube, Isicathamiya, Gumbout, Makwaya, Mbaqanga, Toyi toyi and Kwaito. These are South African Musical Genres. However they played a crucial and major role in fighting for apartheid regime because during the apartheid era pupils or natives were not granted freedom of speech but through music they expressed themselves.
In this blog I want to emphasise and highlight on the three types of genres which are Kwaito, House music and Hip hop. These genres had taken our generation by storm from 1990s till to date. Kwaito music invented the music industry during 1990s. During that era Kwaito was making waves mentioning groups such as Trompies, Bongo Maffin and Boom Shaka. Then House music invented which seems like, the majority of our generation listen to at the moment. I think House music is about spiritual feeling that exploits the body and the mind to the lovers of House music.
Still House music is gradually fading hence it invented and was popular in 2000 till today. Yet Hip hop music is becoming more and more popular nowadays. It is taking the target audience especially female and males living in urban area by storm. Nevertheless you are being classified as cool and stylish if you are the fan. In addition all these genres and their shift they demonstrate that nothing last for eternity but music amend with time and generation.

What is your opinion  based to the information above?

  3. I personaly think that musicians of those days, made nice music. Today's music just talks about money, having mulitples lovers and owning fast cars. I can'not enjoy it because in most cases it is just noise. But you are right though, in today's world to reach young people you can use music and trust me, you are going to be successful in persuading them, aslong as you make it sound 'cool'

  7. Zam, Allow me to appreciate your articulation and manner in which you defined our music in relation to our society, well done dear.
Our people were not heard but through music we manage to realise a democratic society.
    Keep up the good work.

  9. I agree with you that these different genres have played their roles and blew everyone away with time and its advancments. everyone has different music that appeals to them but in my opinion music has become more about living in the moment and what is hot at that point, music hardly has a message these days.
